Syria

I didn’t know what to expect from Syria, but after performing Twelfth Night in Damascus in 2010, I stayed on to tour the country and fell completely in love with its generous, hospital, fascinating people. Each day would bring at least ten extraordinary delights and surprises and the country itself was astoundingly beautiful. It also holds some of the most wonderful ancient monuments, like the Crusader castle Krak des Chevaliers, many sadly destroyed by ISIS during the war, particularly in the ancient Roman city of Palmyra. I grew to loathe its President Assad who had wreaked such havoc on the country and its people, and so it is immensely satisfying to know that both him and his horrific family have finally gone. Like the rest of the world, I can only hope for a better future for Syria’s inspiring and long suffering people.
