Jury Duty

I’ve spent the last several days as a member of a jury and it feels like the most serious thing I’ve ever done. It’s quite an extraordinary system that twelve random people from all ages and walks of life are summoned to attend court and within a couple of hours, without any kind of assessment, you are all sitting before a judge, listening to the prosecutor set out the case against a defendant. I feel extremely fortunate to have spent the seven days of the trial with a fabulous group of people, who all brought an immense seriousness and collective life skills to the proceedings, with a good dollop of British humour. It felt less like a duty, and more of a privilege, to play a part in it all. I’m meeting up with a couple of them tomorrow and looking forward to it.
