I’ve been in literary heaven reading Barry Diller’s extraordinary life story – a man I’d never heard of who went from ABC Television to Chairman of Paramount Studios (to founding Tinder – among other things!). It’s a beautifully written book of such clarity that takes you deeply into his monumental professional achievements and conflicted personal life that makes for a stunning read. It was Paramount that produced Airplane!, so I then picked up the book I’d bought last year but hadn’t fancied the layout, until I discovered just how brilliant it was in capturing the journey of Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker who went from High School film making to writing and directing not only Airplane! but Police Squad, The Naked Gun series and Hot Shots. It’s a wonderful dissection of the art of comedy in all its forms. I wish both books had been ten times longer. Where will I find my next fix?
