There’s nothing quite like doing a pure slapstick scene on the stage of the Empire Theatre in Liverpool, knowing it was where Laurel and Hardy performed on their tours of Britain. I haven’t had a feeling quite like it before. And something mysterious happened this week: I added in a line to the end of this scene and repeated it, which got a laugh. And as I continued to repeat it, the laugh got louder. So I kept going, each time the laugh getting bigger. And now I’m wondering how far I can go, while at the same time being hyper keen not to go past the peak laugh. What makes it so mysterious is that I have no idea why they find it so funny – and certainly no idea why repeating it makes it funnier. An experiment is in progress!
